Measuring a Metre

Today we had great fun guessing how big we thought a metre was. We used our estimating skills and parts of our body to make personal benchmarks of how big a metre is.

Logan found that he measured a metre from his ankle to his shoulder.

Then we used our metre ribbons to measure different things around the school.

We worked well together and used good problem solving skills to work out how to measure large objects.

Some of us used fractions to describe how long things were!

A special Visitor

On our first day back this term we had a special visitor to the classroom - Connor's Auntie,  Kate- Brookes- Peterson, all the way from Australia.
Kate is a medal winning swimmer and she came to talk to us about her swimming triumphs and show us her impressive medals.

We prepared some questions before she came. These are the things we learnt about Kate:

  • She first started swimming when she was 5 years old.
  • She has been swimming for 20 years.
  • She used to practice for 4 hours everyday- except Sundays!
  • The longest swim she participated in was a 25km swim which is 1000 lengths!!
  • She stopped swimming when she was 26.
  • She won a Bronze medal for Australia in the world championship for freestyle.
  • She also won 15 gold medals for Australia
  • She has travelled all over the world.
  • She has raced in Oceans, rivers and pools.
  • Now she is a police Officer.
  • We learnt that it takes hard work and lots of training to be a successful swimmer.

Thank you for coming Kate- We think you are amazing!!
